Chapter Six

The smell of breakfast brought her out of a fitful sleep that had involved dreams of dancing and evaporating clothing.

Teal got up and blinked at the outfit that was hanging on a stand near the door. Jeans, sneakers, and a button-down shirt were on one hangar, a matching bra and panty set were on the other.

A quick shower was in order, and when she was out with a wet head, she cheated and turned her hair to feathers and then back again. When her hair became feathers, it shed all the water. Transforming back, her hair was dry.

She got dressed and jumped around in the new sneakers. Her mother frowned on wearing casual clothing anytime. This was the most fun she had had in years.

Teal headed downstairs, and Tony was seated and plowing through a very large breakfast.

Dira smiled and gestured to the sideboard. “Help yourself. It is easier to keep the heating magic to one object rather than the table.”

Teal loaded up a plate with scrambled eggs, bacon, toast, and a muffin.

Carafes of coffee and tea were on the table. Teal got herself some coffee and doctored it to her liking before sitting back a few seats away from both of them and diving into her food with enthusiasm.

When Teal had finished and was nursing her second coffee, Dira began to speak. “Today, we are going to meet one couple and two individuals. All of them have been affected by the strictures against leaving their own clans or guilds for love.”

Teal paused. “Why?”

Dira looked from one of them to the other. “So you can both understand what is at stake here. This isn’t a game or something to play at for a while. It is a difficult commitment, and it will be hard, but it will also be rewarding and give you a new family.”

Teal frowned. “A new family?”

Dira hauled out a pack of files. “These are the candidates for permanent positions here. There is an excellent candidate for bartender. A naga who is stuck with his serpentine eyes and fangs, a tiger who has experience with running a bar, a landscaper who can work with me to redesign every inch of this place, and an architect who will manage the expansion. Some will live in the Crossroads, but others will have homes at the edge of the expansion. Many just need a place where they can be away from humans.”

Dira handed them the files. Teal looked through the staff lists and qualifications along with beasts, and she smiled. She traded the documents with Tony and took the one that contained the architect’s information. She blinked in surprise. “I have seen these designs before.”

Dira nodded. “Of course, you have. He’s famous, but he is a mythical shifter and finds life with humans exhausting.”

Teal turned the page, and she saw the details. “Oh. I haven’t met one of those before. Well, not that I know of.”

“That is the point with his kind. They blend in with humans very well, until they don’t.
